Dental Implants in Douglas & Isle of Man
Missing teeth can make eating, speaking and smiling feel different. At Laxey Dental Surgery, we offer dental implant consultations for patients from Douglas and across the Isle of Man at our practice in Laxey. We take time to understand your concerns, assess your oral health and explain your options before you decide whether to proceed.
Our experience in dental implant treatment
At Laxey Dental Surgery we have a particular interest in dental implants.Prior to setting up the surgery Colin Partington undertook a multi system implant certificate course at Trafford General Hospital, Manchester between 1999 and 2000. Following this he began introducing implant treatment into general dental practice. In 2007 he embarked on a further two years of part time study and was awarded a Postgraduate Diploma in Dental Implantology at the University of Salford in 2009. Colin continues to attend implant courses on a regular basis and is a member of the Association of Dental Implantology
In addition to offering our own patients implant treatment Colin also accepts referrals from other dentists on the island.
What are dental implants?
A dental implant is a small post, usually made from titanium, placed in the jaw to support a replacement tooth. Once it has integrated with the surrounding bone, it can support a crown, a bridge or, in suitable cases, a denture. Implants can replace a single missing tooth or help restore several missing teeth, depending on your individual needs.
Unlike a removable replacement, an implant-supported crown stays in place during everyday use. However, implants are not the only option: we will also discuss bridges and dentures where appropriate, including the benefits, limitations and maintenance each involves.
Is implant treatment right for you?
Suitability depends on your gum health, available jawbone, medical history and other factors, including smoking. Your consultation includes an examination and any necessary imaging. Some patients may need additional treatment before an implant can be placed. Active gum disease needs attention, so we may discuss gum disease treatment and support from our dental hygienist as part of your preparation.
What to expect during treatment
We explain the proposed stages, likely timescale and costs before treatment begins. Implant placement is usually carried out with local anaesthetic. A healing period follows before the final replacement tooth is fitted; the timing varies from person to person. We will explain whether a temporary replacement is appropriate while you heal.
As with any surgical treatment, implants involve risks, including infection, discomfort and failure to integrate with the bone. Additional procedures may be needed in some cases. Your dentist will discuss these considerations and answer your questions so that you can make an informed choice. A successful outcome cannot be guaranteed.
Preparing for your appointment and caring for your implants
Bring details of your medicines and medical history, and tell us about any concerns or previous dental treatment. If you are new to the practice, a new-patient dental check-up can help establish your overall dental health. Follow the preparation instructions your dentist gives you rather than changing medicines yourself.
After placement, follow your personalised advice on cleaning, eating and managing discomfort. Contact the practice if you have concerns about your recovery. Implants need ongoing care: daily cleaning around the replacement teeth, regular dental reviews and hygiene appointments help protect the surrounding gums. They are not maintenance-free and may need repairs or replacement components over time.

Further Reading
There is a wealth of information about dental implants available on the internet and in the media, both at a national and local level. At Laxey Dental Surgery we always encourage patients to research subjects that will affect future health. However we do recommend that sources of information should be chosen carefully as some websites are unreliable and press reports and advertising can be misleading. We currently use three different implant systems, all of which are subject to strict quality controls in their research, development and manufacturing. All of these systems have decades of scientific research behind them.
We recommend visiting the website of The Association of Dental Implantology at www.adi.org.uk. This is a very professional, unbiased site which patients find particularly informative. Leaflets are available to download or can be requested from us at the surgery.
