Veneers are thin, custom-made shells that cover the front surface of a tooth. They can transform teeth that are discoloured, worn, chipped or slightly misshapen, creating a balanced and natural smile. Patients visit us from Douglas and all over the Isle of Man for careful, conservative veneer treatment.
Porcelain or composite veneers?
Porcelain veneers are made in a dental laboratory and are highly resistant to staining, with a lifelike translucency. Composite veneers are built directly onto the tooth in the surgery, similar to composite bonding, and are usually quicker and more affordable but may need polishing more often.
We will explain the pros and cons of each for your teeth. Sometimes a simpler option, such as teeth whitening or orthodontic straightening, achieves the look you want without veneers at all.
The veneer process
Treatment starts with a thorough examination and, if needed, treatment for gum disease, since healthy gums are essential for veneers to look and last well. We then plan the shape and shade with you, and may show a mock-up so you can preview the result.
For porcelain veneers, a thin layer of enamel is usually removed, impressions are taken, and temporary covers are fitted. At a second visit the finished veneers are bonded securely in place and checked for comfort and bite.
Long-lasting results
Well-maintained porcelain veneers can last many years. Good home care and regular hygienist appointments protect the gum line around them. Veneers are one part of our cosmetic dentistry care in the Isle of Man.
