Gum disease is very common and is a leading cause of tooth loss in adults, yet it is often painless in the early stages. At Laxey Dental Surgery we help patients from Douglas and across the Isle of Man spot the signs early and get gums back to health.
Signs of gum disease
Watch for gums that bleed when you brush, look red or swollen, or feel tender. Bad breath, receding gums, sensitivity and teeth that feel loose can indicate more advanced disease, known as periodontitis.
The early stage, gingivitis, is reversible with good cleaning. Left untreated, it can damage the bone supporting your teeth. Gum health is also linked to wider health conditions such as diabetes.
How we treat it
Treatment begins with a full assessment, usually as part of your new patient check-up. Your dental hygienist then carries out thorough cleaning above and below the gum line to remove bacteria and tartar, sometimes over several visits and with local anaesthetic for comfort.
We support you with clear home-care advice and review appointments to check healing. Persistent or advanced cases may be referred for specialist periodontal care.
Healthy gums, healthy smile
Stable gums are the foundation for every other treatment. They are needed before cosmetic dentistry, veneers or dental implants, and before teeth straightening can safely begin.
If your gums are suddenly swollen or painful, see our emergency dentist guidance or call 01624 863422.
